As vagabonds go, Vincent Poag is one that makes the life of a troubadour fun and winsome. He sings, plays guitar and composes all of the material, creating a rich tapestry of sounds and moods with a coming and going string or horn section as well as a core of Matt Anthony/g, Jeff Carney/b and Larry Lelli/b. The team gets vaudevillian for “One Step Ahead of Gloom” while producing some quirky chamber moods for “Sir Nicholas Winton.” Poag can go with blue hues for “You Love Me” and paint a Nashville skyline for “Too Much of Nothin’ To Do.” Fun folk moods make you feel like you’re strolling through the Renaissance Fair on “Beautiful Day” and “Piper Play,” putting a smile on each story, while showing he can rock steady on “Young Again.” Veritable and versatile.

On June 29, New York City-based singer-songwriter Vincent Poag unveils his third album Heroes And Demons (Danal Music, LLC). Heroes And Demons finds Poag continuing his tradition of exploring the human condition via his unique brand of storytelling. In the vein of his first two albums Circling Back (2011) and For The Girls (2014), Poag draws inspiration from everyday occurrences and thought-provoking subjects, spinning his observations into stories and poetic studies. His distinct vocals – a mix of grit, gravitas, humor, and honesty – have been compared to Randy Newman, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, and Leonard Cohen, but remain totally his own.

Folk music is the general concept here. Within that category, though, there is quite a bit of range. And, this does move outside the “folk” box at times, too. This is an entertaining album with a fairly wide appeal.

METROLYRICS
Saying Vincent Poag is a Scarlett Johansson fan might not be doing him justice. The folk singer-songwriter just released his new song "Scarlett & Me," and it's all about an imaginary day spent with the Hollywood starlet after a chance encounter in the streets of New York. The story begins with Vincent walking down Fifth Ave. and bumping right into Scarlett, who just happened to be looking down at her phone texting. (SMH, Scar-Jo.)
